A Brief Look For Health Insurance In A World Of Money Issues

Getting sick is something no one wants to think about, but when it becomes a reality it can be that much harder to deal with. The cost of health care continues to rise, making it difficult to face financially. Consider being faced with a life threatening or lifelong disease and trying to pay for it yourself. This becomes an impossible situation without health insurance. Medicare as it is now cannot be the only option when your family and additional health concerns may arise when you fall ill.

When a person’s health begins to deteriorate it can put them at risk of lost employment and as well as financial hardship due to travel expenses, cost of medical procedures, and medication. This is a risk that should not be taken. Just try and imaging losing your means of transportation, your home, or even worse. Debt is difficult enough to manage without being sick, and without that sickness becoming an added cause of debt and financial difficulty.

Not being able to afford medicine or necessary treatment just adds to the strain of getting sick in the first place. This will only affect your mental health in addition to your physical health. Illness begins to infect all areas of an individual’s life due to financial hardship. This makes it hard to give your family a healthy diet and provide your children with a good education.

Medicare does provide some basic assistance if and when a person qualifies for it. However, even if these requirements are met, the wait can be years before Medicare assistance comes into effect for some individuals. Medicare is also divided into sections and you have to qualify for all parts in order to see the full benefits. Medication, for example, is not at the top of the list.

You have to hope that Medicare covers the drugs that you need, and you must be able to afford the premiums and deductibles that are out of pocket costs. This adds to any financial strain you are faced with when you cannot work. The disadvantages of not having health coverage make the value of purchasing insurance drastically high.

In an aging population, it may become even harder to acquire full assistance through the current Medicare program. It is based on necessity and that will not always include long term pain sufferers if they are surviving (regardless of their quality of life). People should not put their futures on the line by relying on a system that may or may not benefit them.

Insurance providers make up a large list. Finding an affordable plan amongst them will mean that you can avoid outrageous medical expenses and what could become an impossible situation. Coverage can potentially save your life, especially with the economy as it is. For all of these reasons, it needs to be taken very seriously.

Determining which plan is needed and what options are affordable are the first steps in deciding on health cover. Consider whether you need inclusive coverage or if limited coverage is enough. Pay attention to any out of pocket costs you might incur in addition to the upfront costs needed for coverage. When your finances are at risk it is hard enough, but your family, your future and your life are on the line. For these reasons, health insurance is certainly invaluable. Do not wait until it is too late.

Health Care is not Health Insurance

It seems that whenever we hear a discussion of “health care” it is in the context of forty million people without health care and the implication is that “health care” equals “health insurance”. There will be many articles to come discussing health insurance, but first, let’s clarify what health care is because IT IS NOT HEALTH INSURANCE. Try as I might I cannot equate health care with health insurance and I have begun to realize that “health care” really means something different to everyone.

It is human nature to worry about what might happen even though this unknown “thing” may never happen. So whatever health concern or health issue you have about your health and how you deal with it is really “health care” for you. Health Insurance is a BUSINESS and health insurance providers care only how many of the “prepaid” services a policy holder will use. In reality it should be catastrophic coverage for unexpectedly expensive care needs.

Unfortunately, society as a whole has not used health insurance properly and the result is less coverage of health needs with higher health care costs and more profits for insurance companies. FACT: If an individual practices good health habits like eating and exercising properly, this person will eliminate well over fifty percent of all the possible illnesses or diseases one could experience. How are you taking care of your health?

I would like to think that people would desire to live a life style conducive to good health but reality is that it is hard work and too many people are not willing to take personal responsibility for living a healthy life style. These same people are trying their best to get the rest of us to pay for their health care needs by shaping public health care debate to their favor.

Health care to YOU should be dealing with your own health care needs as they are different from everyone else’s. Health insurance is a business and the providers really do not care about your health unless it costs them money, then they will try their best to “un-cover” you so as not to have to pay.

Let me know what you think about this question and the answer.

I will be developing conversations around this issue and would love to hear from YOU if any questions you may have about health care. In my life time, I have seen both “universal” and “free-enterprise” health care systems and am anxious to participate in the debate because I am absolutely convinced embracing “free-enterprise” health care is the only way we can have a viable and affordable health care system.

A debate on health care needs to happen and Fritz Scheffel is leading a movement to fix the health care system. He is the writer and author of “Health Care: It Can Be Fixed” and this is a good short read on the subject at hand. Citizens of this country, and the world, need to know what health care really is and not just what they hope it will be. To facilitate the debate we are launching a campaign utilizing the internet and the vast resources now available. If you agree with us you can participate by helping to finance the effort as we can only go as far as our resources will let us. Our plans are many fold;

1) we will be an advocate for health care programs based on “free-enterprise” principles and totally devoid of ANY government intervention,

2) we will be an advocate for a doctor friendly health care system,

3) we will be an advocate for businesses, both large and small, to be freed from health care responsibilities,

4) we will attempt to establish learning centers for politicians, and future politicians, to learn how to save our tax dollars instead of seeing how many of our tax dollars they can spend,

5) for those weak citizens with their hands held out and expecting government to provide for them, we will work for YOU because we know you will have better care with our approach than any government run program could ever provide, and

6) we will continue to expand our efforts as long as we have the resources and the energy.

Let’s have a healthy debate about health care, not one made up of biased sound bites fed us through biased news media outlets. Instead, let’s exchange ideas to help people around the world understand that health care provided by government IS NOT FREE.

Here is a newsflash for all to hear, a government does not have ANY MONEY with which to provide us with health care, or anything else for that matter, unless they first take the money from us in the form of TAXES, LICENSES, or FEES. A government run health care system is fertile ground for abuse, inferior medical care, rationing, and corruption. TODAY, in this country NINETY PERCENT of our health care resources as used up by only TEN PERCENT of our population. Be careful what you ask for!

Health Insurance Self Employed Options Require Research

In these tough economic times, lots of workers who have been laid off have opted to start their own businesses rather than seek new corporate jobs. While this choice can be enormously satisfying and empowering, it comes with significant disadvantages, and one of them is finding health insurance self employed alternatives.

Some 2.6 million independent workers have individual policies, while 3.5 million get health insurance through their own business group policy, according to the Employee Benefits Research Institute. The following suggestions can help anyone who’s currently self-employed or intends to start a business in the near future identify health insurance options.

If you have the time to plan your departure from a corporate job, then consider maintaining health insurance coverage through the company’s group policy. All workers whose employers have 20 or more employees have this right under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) of 1986. COBRA provides that unless they’re fired, former employees can keep their group coverage for up to 18 months after leaving their employers.

This option comes with a hefty price tag, however, since self-employed people must pay the full premium cost of their health care insurance. Most employees pay an average of 28 percent of their insurance premiums, while their employers pick up the rest of the tab. Taking on that additional 72 percent can put a big dent in the wallet. Details on COBRA are available through human resources or from the US Department of Labor.

Rely on Your Spouse. Many self-employed people swear by an old saying: The best way for a freelancer to be successful is to have a spouse who works as an employee. This is especially true when it comes to health insurance in the United States, where some 3.3 million self employed workers are covered by their spouse’s health insurance. It’s likely that signing up under an employed spouse’s health plan will be much less expensive than many other options, including coverage through COBRA.

If you’re single, or your employed spouse has no health insurance, then you’re forced to strike out on your own. This means doing research, and a lot of it. There are two options here: buying health care coverage on your own through the Internet, or working with an insurance agent. The do-it-yourself route requires more work, because even with the many websites that offer insurance comparisons, the individual still has to do the math on prices and coverages. There’s also work involved engaging an insurance agent. The wise consumer interviews at least three agents, and checks the performance of all of them through the state insurance commissioner’s office.

Whether going it alone or working through an insurance agent, don’t make any deals until you’ve thoroughly investigated the performance of your most likely candidate for health insurance. An insurance company with lousy customer service, even if its prices are the lowest, is no bargain. The state insurance commissioner’s website typically provides information on how many customer complaints an insurance company receives, and what those complaints entailed. If the health insurance company you’re considering has a poor service record, move on to a new candidate.

Finally, although you’re working for yourself, don’t forget the strength of numbers. Many self-employed people find that it helps enormously to seek health care coverage through professional organizations. Two of the top organizations in this regard are the National Association of the Self-Employed for independent contractors and the National Association of Professional Employer Associations for business owners. Either can provide additional information on finding health insurance self employed alternatives.
